This "Hamburger Pie" recipe is one that we grew up with. It's very similar to a shepherds pie sort of dish. It's basically a one dish meal, it's economical and you can prepare this the night before and bake it right before dinner. Those are three winning keys to a great recipe for me. Add a salad and bread and dinner is done!
Here is what you will need:
1 lb. ground chuck
1 medium onion, diced
1 can cut green beans, drained (could substitute corn)
1 can tomato soup
1 tsp. salt
1/2 tsp. black pepper
1/2 tsp. chili powder
1 Tbsp. Worcestershire sauce
2 cups mashed potatoes
6 Tbs. milk
1 egg, beaten
1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
Brown ground chuck and onion, drain excess fat. Add the green beans tomato soup, Worcestershire sauce and seasonings. Mix together and pour into a 2 quart casserole dish that has been sprayed with nonstick spray.
Beat the milk and egg into the potatoes and spoon 1/4 cup mounds over the beef mixture.
Sprinkle the top with the shredded cheese. Place in a 350 degree oven for 30 to 35 minutes or until hot and bubbly.
Exact recipe I use! It is one of my favorites too!
ReplyDeletemy mother in law cooked this a lot but never used tomato soup, chili powder, Worcestershire sauce, milk or eggs. This is a dish she cooked when she had left over mashed potatoes. it is fast and inexpensive. I want to try the Scottish version.
DeleteIn addition to my previous post...My mother was raised in Missouri and this site reminds me so much of her. The sayings such as "a mess" and "I love you like biscuits and gravy". I can see her saying these phrases as I was growing up! Thank you for sharing!
ReplyDeleteI learned to make this in Home Ec class at Emmerich Manuel High School in Indianapolis 46 years ago. Absolutely loved it. I lost the recipe and couldn't make it for several years. So grateful for the recipe. Thank you. Dearly love this site!

ReplyDeleteBeen Eating this Since I was a Kid. My mother used to make this. Still just as good. She gave the recipe to my wife and now she makes it . Good Eats.
ReplyDeleteI will be making this dish to take to our Wednesday Night Potluck Dinner at church when we start them back in the fall. Sounds and looks delicious! I'm sure it will go over very well. Will make it for my family sooner than that though! Thanks so much for this site! I'm turning into quite a good cook thanks to all the recipes! LOL
ReplyDeletecan you use instant potatoes?
ReplyDeleteIt taste better with homemade potatoes :)
DeleteYes, I always use instant.
DeleteI have been making this recipe since the '60s. I don't even use the recipe for it. So simple to make. My kids loved it growing up and they cook it themselves now.
ReplyDeleteI can't eat it due to the cheese (I'm allergic), but it's similar to what a cook for my family. I think they'll love it!
ReplyDeleteI've also seen it with instant potatoes and with shredded hashbrowns.
What size can of tomatoe soup? Condensed?
ReplyDeleteYes, regular condensed can without adding water.
Deletesounds pretty much like the cottage pie we make here in Scotland. i really must try this one though, sounds real tasty, thanks
ReplyDeleteWould you please post the recipe you use in Scotland? Thanks
DeleteYes, please. We loved those in Scotland. Thanks!
DeleteGuys, I'm so sorry I didn't expect any replies to my comment and here I have two, bless you. For cottage pie, make pretty much as above but just use the ground chuck, finely chopped onions and a couple of beef bullion cubes with salt and pepper to taste. Brown it all up, drain off excess fat and throw in a couple diced carrots and a handful of frozen peas and half a cup of water. Bring to boil, simmer for about 40 minutes. If it's still a little on the watery side (usually is) add enough cornflour to bring it to the same thickness as the hamburger pie filling. Meanwhile mash your potatoes with about 2oz butter and enough pouring cream to make them light and fluffy. Season with some pepper and spread over the meat. Bung it in the oven as per hamburger pie and you're done. Enjoy. My Scots/Irish parents will be spinning in their graves to hear this but, truthfully, having had the hamburger pie now i find the shepherds pie a wee bit bland😊
DeleteLooks interesting, although I am vegan, my family isn't.. So I will definitely make this for them. Do you have a good pickled peach recipe? I love pickled peaches and have forgotten how to make them the way my Granny taught me many, many years ago.
ReplyDeleteYou can make this recipe using the Boca meat substitute and skip the cheese on top and the eggs in the potatoes. I used the vegan butter and seasoned the potatoes well. It was delicious and my kids who are either vegan or vegetarian loved it.
DeleteI also grew up on this, (sort of). My mom maid it on the stove and it is really easy. I don't use a recipe either.
ReplyDeleteI am not much into the mashed potatoes on top so I do basically the same recipe except I place everything in a pie crust and top with cheese and the top crust! Really great! NO MASHED POTATOES INCLUDED! :)
ReplyDeleteDo season the potatoes like mash patatoes?
ReplyDeleteMine is just a little different . I use corn instead of green beans , diced stewed tomatoes instead of tomato soup , and I add some of the cheese to the hamburger mix before topping it with potatoes and more cheese . Most of the time I use real mashed potatoes but I've made it with instant ( to save time) and no one seemed to noticed a difference .
ReplyDeleteThis is a recipe you can play with and make it your own .
