1 (4oz.) pkg. German chocolate
1/4 cup butter (1/2 stick)
1 1/2 cups evaporated milk
1 1/2 cup sugar
3 Tbs. cornstarch
1/8 tsp. salt
2 eggs, beaten
1 tsp. vanilla
1 1/2 cups flaked coconut, divided
1 cup chopped pecans, divided
1 deep dish pie shell
Melt chocolate with butter over low heat. Remove from heat and stir in evaporated milk. In a separate bowl, combine sugar, cornstarch, salt and eggs. Add the sugar mixture to the melted chocolate.
Stir in 1 cup of the coconut and 1/2 cup of the chopped pecans and the vanilla. Pour into the pie shell that has been placed on a cookie sheet. The cookie sheet will help the pie cook more evenly and prevent spill overs. Sprinkle the top of the filling with the remaining 1/2 cup coconut and remaining 1/2 cup of pecans.
Place in a 350 degree oven and bake for 50-55 minutes or until the top puffs and just starts to brown and crack a little. Allow to cool for at least 3 hours before serving.
German Chocolate Pie!
Where do you get german chocolate
ReplyDeleteBy the baking chocolate and chocolate chips
DeleteGrocery store, Wal Mart...it's called Bakers German Sweet Chocolate and comes in a bar in a green package. Look in the baking section.
DeleteI found Bakers Sweet German Chocolate Bars at the Dollar Tree. Don't know how long they will last though.
Delete@ anonymous....what state do you live in...I would love to buy up some of the german chocolate bars at dollar tree. That would be a great savings.
DeleteGood luck waiting 3 hours before you eat this.. I can't wait to try it.
DeleteI'm with Darlene, I couldn't wait 3 hours. Yum yum
DeleteYummy, sounds delish..can`t wait to try this!
ReplyDeleteThis looks so decadent and wonderful. Must try! I have to say, I have made many of your recipes and haven't found one we didn't like. Thank you for what you do!
ReplyDeleteI worked at a local Captain D's seafood right our of High School and they had a pie just like this on the menu. I was so Disappointed when they discontinued it. I will definitely be making this very soon.
ReplyDeleteWhere can I get the German chocolate?
ReplyDeleteYou can find German Chocolate on the baking aisle in any grocery. It is made by Baker's and will be with the chocolate chips and cocoa and such.
ReplyDeleteThank you so much! Can't wait to make this!
Deletewould this turn out good without the coconut?
ReplyDeleteI didnt see where the cake mix went. Would you please explain? Thanks
ReplyDeleteThere is not any cake mix in this. I think you mistook the German chocolate for cake mix. It's chocolate... baking chocolate, found in the baking aisle.
ReplyDeleteI'm glad you explained that thank you
DeleteLooks good
ReplyDeleteWould love to make this I would have to leave out the coconut. My daughter is allergic to coconut.
ReplyDeleteyou do not have to put coconut in
DeleteFurrs cafeteria use to make that,i worked at a furrs cafeteria and it is delicious pie
ReplyDeleteI had way too much filling for a deep dish crust. When the baking time was up I was shocked to find alot of the filling had run over the crust and burned so badly it will all be thrown in the trash including the ruined cookie sheet. All the ingredients, oven temp. and baking time correct. I'm not sure if I added the evaporated milk to the chocolate or sugar mixture but can't imagine that caused this catastrophe ! Any suggestions?
ReplyDeleteOMG. Just discovered my mistake. Grabbed the container of baking powder thinking it was cornstarch. That explains alot.
ReplyDeleteDidn't mean to laugh, sorry. Easy mistake to make.
DeleteOh no, that would do it.
ReplyDeleteI've made this twice now and it's fabulous. The mixture does spill over the regular, store bought pie crust. I think next time I will buy my own pie crust and use a deep dish pie plate of my own. I would definitely put a cookie sheet under though. I also had to cook it a little bit longer but my oven is old. Very good recipe though. :)
ReplyDeletethis pie is so delicious ! I doubled it and it made three pies.... and they did not spill over. It will impress your guests.
ReplyDeleteDoes this work without the coconut?
ReplyDeleteMy husband doesn't like nuts or coconut, but would love this chocolate pie. Any other suggestions for a topping?
ReplyDeleteI would make it into a cream pie by pre baking the crust, adding one egg, (but separating the whites for meringue and use yolks here), adding enough milk to the evap milk to make 3 cups and cook it until it boils and thickens. Make meringue with the whites, brown it, and cool.
DeleteThat is a chocolate meringue pie, not a German Chocolate Pie, which are two very different recipes. There is a recipe on this site for a Chocolate Meringue Pie. If your husband doesn't like chocolate or nuts, he isn't going to like anything that is called "German Chocolate' because generally that is what it involves.
DeleteMy Mom used to put whipped cream between the layers of her German Chocolate cake so I am certain if you just top the pie with whipped cream, it would be delicious!
DeleteMade this yesterday. Outrageously good. Very rich...will have to invite company next time!
ReplyDeletethis is my favorite pie, hands down! My mom always made it so good and so special. I always requested this for my birthday instead of cake. Never liked German chocolate cake but I'd do anything for this pie. :)
ReplyDeletethis is the same recipe my parents have used for years and it calls for a 10 inch pie shell.
ReplyDeletePlease put one for a plain Chocolate pie from scratch would love to make one. Thank you
ReplyDeleteThere is a Chocolate Meringue Pie posted on the site already.
DeleteI did this recipe last week and it tasted wonderful. However, it looked as if I had 2 layers in the crust, top layer chocolate, bottom layer color of pecan pie basic mixture. What do you think I did wrong? I wanted it to look like yours--all chocolate. Thanks for sharing the recipe!
ReplyDeleteI would also be interested in a version without the coconut.
ReplyDeleteI found this recipe via a Facebook community. They took your picture and posted the entire recipe & didn't give credit (unless "nothing on this page is ours. no infringement intended!" counts...) I had to hunt for your page using Google image search.
ReplyDeleteHere's their page in case you want to say something. I don't think they mean to be rude but none of their posts link to anyone's page or give any credit. It's bad internet etiquette if nothing else... https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=349813171796618&set=a.360860750691860.1073741832.324732720971330&type=3&src=https%3A%2F%2Fsphotos-a.xx.fbcdn.net%2Fhphotos-ash4%2F481924_349813171796618_164809965_n.jpg&size=320%2C213
Thank you for making me aware of that. I will address it. I appreciate it! :)
ReplyDeletewe don't even have German chocolate pie in Germany, i never seen one.
ReplyDeleteGerman chocolate has nothing to do with Germany actually. It is a chocolate named for the man who created it, Sam German. He was a chocolate maker for the Baker's chocolate company here in America.
DeleteWhat kind of adjustments would need to be made for high altitude cooking?
ReplyDeleteI am not an expert on cooking at high altitudes, mainly because I never have had to. You can google the question and get several different articles on it. Here is one site I found: http://homecooking.about.com/od/altitude/High_Altitude_Cooking.htm
DeleteWhat can I substitute for the evaporated milk. It doesn't agree with me
ReplyDeleteYou could use half and half or cream. You might need to increase the cornstarch by 1 Tbs. if you do. The evaporated milk has had most of the water removed so it's perfect for pies, because it sets up and doesn't have tendency to run.
DeleteI can't believe all the great recipes that you have. I could cook and bake for months with just the ones i've found so far and i just found your recipes today. Do you by any chance sell them in cookbook form. I would love to have all of them or at least most of them. Thank you for posting such wonderful recipes.
