It's actually not a salad, but more like a dessert that goes really well with the other holiday selections. This recipe can also be lightened up quite a bit without sacrificing much of the flavor at all by using light cream cheese, light whipped topping and sugar free Jello..
Here is what you will need for this Pretzel Salad:
1 stick butter, melted
2 cups crushed pretzels
1 cup chopped pecans
3 Tbs. sugar
1 cup powdered sugar
1 8oz. pkg cream cheese, softened
1 8oz. frozen whipped cream
1 16 oz. box frozen strawberries
1 large strawberry flavored jello
2 cups boiling water
1 1/2 cups cold water
Spray a 9"x13" baking dish with nonstick spray. Mix together butter, crushed pretzels, 3 Tbs. sugar and chopped pecans. Press into the bottom of the baking dish and bake for 10 minutes at 350 degrees. Let cool.
Beat cream cheese and powdered sugar together and then beat in frozen whipped topping.
Spread over the cooled crust. Place in the refrigerator for 30 minutes.
Dissolve Jello in 2 cups bowling water, add 1 1/2 cups of cold water and the strawberries. Stir until it starts to slightly thicken. Pour over the cream cheese layer, cover and refrigerate for several hours or overnight until Jello sets completely.
Serve cut in squares with a dollop of whipped cream on each piece.
I have never had this so I am going to make some but use a different fruit not a fan of strawberries

ReplyDeleteI used to attend a huge family/friends Sunday dinner and one of the girls brought this dish. She'd get positively nasty with anyone who ate it for dessert instead of as a salad with the main dishes. Since it's so sweet and so delicious and her dish was always emptied I couldn't understand the attitude at all, lol, but there you go.

ReplyDeleteI was about to say the same thing. Someone has always had this salad at fellowships after a funeral. Still, it is a very good salad and I think I will make it for a more pleasant gathering.
Bet it would be good with chocolate covered pretzels!!
ReplyDeleteI make this quite often for my family. Every Christmas plus my youngest daughter requests it instead of a birthday cake each year. The recipe I use is slightly different tho.. I use raspberry jello instead of strawberry (but still use the strawberry fruit). Also, the middle layer has regular sugar instead of powdered and no nuts in the crust, just pretzels
ReplyDeleteThis is one of my all-time favorite dishes. We have it every year for Christmas Eve lunch. I use an emulsion blender and blend the strawberries in the jello (that's because I don't like chunks of strawberry in the jello). Everyone in the famliy now prefers it with blended strawberries. :)
ReplyDeleteI have a recipe.that is very similar to this but mine does not have pecans in the crust and instead of hello I use Danish Junket - strawberry flavored. I have 3 nieces and 2 daughters that all ask for it for their birthdays. it has become a family favorite for many years.
ReplyDeleteThis salad became my "Go To" recipe for all the Christmas functions that we needed to bring something. I had been looking for this recipe for years, but didn't know what it was called. Now that spring and summer are just around the corner, it will be time to make this again. A great salad for the entire year.
