Now, why is this called a Kentucky Buttermilk Pie and not just a Buttermilk Pie, it's the splash of Kentucky bourbon you add. Everyone knows that any good bourbon is born and raised in Kentucky...don't let anyone tell you different and since it is a Kentucky product, we tend to cook a lot with it. Wait, maybe that is just me...no, I checked and a lot of us use it to cook with...lol. The reason the bourbon works really well with this pie is that it cuts the sugar. The alcohol all evaporates, but the bourbon just leaves a good flavor to the pie. If you do not have bourbon or do not cook with alcohol, just add an extra teaspoon of vanilla, which is mostly alcohol also if it's good vanilla.
Here is what you need for this pie:
1 1/2 cups sugar
2 Tbs. self rising flour
1 stick melted butter
3 eggs
1/2 cup buttermilk
1 tsp. vanilla
2 Tbs. KY bourbon
1 deep dish pie shell
Mix together butter and sugar. Add flour, eggs, and buttermilk and mix well. Add vanilla and bourbon.
Place the pie shell on a cookie sheet and pour the mixture into shell. Place on the center rack of the oven set at 350 degrees for 15 minutes. Decrease the temperature to 300 degrees and bake for 45 minutes. Remove and cool before slicing.
Kentucky Buttermilk Pie!
I LOVE Buttermilk Pie... I've never made it but will now.
ReplyDeleteYUMMY....:)
ReplyDeleteAdd coconut to it and you have French Coconut pie...
ReplyDeleteAs a Kentuckian transplanted to England who is very homesick, this pie is gonna be a great comfort for me tonight! Thanks for posting it! <3
ReplyDeleteAnd happy thanksgiving!!
ReplyDeleteHappy Thanksgiving to you, Beth.
DeleteIt is the same as my buttermilk pie, the only difference is the bourbon.... i wish i had some i sure would give it a try!!! also i have another variation that uses coconut flakes....mmmmm mmmmm good!!!! Have a great Thanksgiving!!! GodBless from Texas ********** <3
ReplyDeleteOh, that's the one I want to see! What do you add to make the coconut version?
DeleteWhat is your variation with coconut?! I love that version!
DeleteI guess that I'll take you out of my newsfeed... I love your recipes, and have asked several times why there's no Pintrest option to save them. There's no use cluttering my feed with recipes that I can't save. :-(
Deletesave them in a file marked recipes on your bookmarks. that's what I do. don't have any reason to go to pintrest, never have. I have gotten more incredible recipes from this page than any other. what a waste to simply take them out of your newsfeeds, eh?
DeleteI copy and paste then print ! Have gotten some wonderful recipes here !
DeleteI use Just A Pinch, and their Pinch It app for my web browser. It will either find the recipe and pinch it, you just save it. Or it will pull up a blank pinch it page and you can copy and paste what you need and then save it.
DeleteAlso, I did just see Pin it at the top of the page above the recipe.

ReplyDeleteThe same as mine but do not use bourbon, but I add 1/2 tsp. of nutmeg. Next one I will try the bourbon. These are my sons favorite!!
ReplyDeleteOH MY GOODNESS! Thanks for posting. I always forget to get the recipe from my aunt who makes these. I'm going to try out soon!
ReplyDeleteDo you have a recipe for vinegar pie, also?
ReplyDeleteI made it and can't figure out why it din't set up good, it was too runny......But the taste is awesome!!
ReplyDeleteYou dud not bake it quite long enough or your oven temperature is off. Get an oven thermometer.
DeleteI don't know why it didn't set up, but it could be several things. Did you bake it at the right temperature for long enough? Also did you use the self rising flour and not plain flour and did you use real butter and not margarine? All of those things can affect the outcome. I am glad it tasted good though.
ReplyDeleteTry a light, light sprinkle of corn meal on top of pie to give it a crunchy, toasty top. I've made it for years, no bourbon, good without it too.
ReplyDeleteYes, do you have a recipe for Vinegar Pie????
ReplyDeleteIs this somewhat akin to chess pie?
ReplyDeleteDo you have a recipe for butter milk cake?
ReplyDeleteI added 1 cup of coconut flakes and baked as directed. It came out amazing. The coconut distributes thru the pie. It will rise to the top and give the pie a beautiful golden brown color.
ReplyDeleteFor those who have asked, there I a Pinterest pin button right above each post. All you have to do to save these recipes to your Pinterest boards is click it. I am not sure why some of you do not see this??? Maybe you are using a phone for viewing and it doesn't show up on there? If so, I cannot control that.
ReplyDeleteI see it at the top of page ...it is actually written in red ...says Pin It....
DeleteCan we make it sugar free and used the Splenda instead of reg. sugar?
ReplyDeleteI make buttermilk pie every year during the holidays, it is a huge hit in my house. I haven't tried it with Bourbon....

ReplyDeleteYou said use 1 extra teaspoon of vanilla if not using bourban. Do you still use the 2 tablespoons also.
ReplyDeleteIf you do not use the bourbon, use 2 teaspoons of vanilla. If you use the bourbon, use 2 Tablespoons bourbon and 1 teaspoon vanilla.
ReplyDeleteThis is a yummy pie. I sometimes change the flavor by adding coconut or lemon juice. My Mama would make this pie when we lived on the farm, because we always had buttermilk and eggs. Brings back sweet memories.
ReplyDeleteI have one in my oven right now. I used splenda instead of sugar. it smells good. sure hope it turns out!
ReplyDeleteis self rising flour different from ordinary flour? I never heard of "self rising before... theeeee-heeeee
ReplyDeleteAdd a touch of lemon juice instead of Bourbon...it's lemon chess pie!
ReplyDeleteThe pinterest button does not show on my Kindle fire and I would love to pin this....
ReplyDeleteUsing the good ol Texas recipe (no bourbon), I have a chocolate buttermilk pie recipe that is amazing. That's for those of us who LOVE chocolate.
